A favorite among staff and residents alike, Vincent Humphrey is a nursing assistant with a winning personality.
A native Jamaican, Humphrey relocated in 2000 to South Florida’s flourishing West Indian community.
There, he fulfilled his love for tropical plants and gardening by working as a landscaper. He also enjoyed playing cricket and soccer — Jamaica’s most popular sports — and expertly prepared his favorite Caribbean dishes.
Upon moving to Cape Cod, Humphrey’s culinary skills earned him a position at Roche Bros. in Mashpee, where he became assistant kitchen manager. He also cooked at Decatur House for a couple of years.
After 16 years as a cook, Humphrey decided to pursue a career in the health field.
“No more kitchens!” he said, shaking his head. “Now I just want to eat, not cook.”
On his days off, Humphrey likes to “cut the lawn, chill in the back yard and watch a little TV.” His tastes in music include reggae, soul and “a little hip hop.”
Humphrey is dad to four adult sons, including one in the Marine Corps. He resides in Mashpee with his wife, Lattoya, and their 17-year-old daughter, Antonian.
Asked if tends to spoil his only daughter just a wee bit, Humphrey flashed a sheepish grin and answered, “yes.”
Humphrey is happy to be back at Decatur House and treasures his interaction with its residents.
“I’ve loved it here since I worked here as a cook,” he said. “I’m fascinated by what you can learn from people when they tell you about their lives,” he said.
Just as we are fascinated to learn about yours, Humphrey
