Support of our residents’ capacity to age in place is a core concept of our philosophy and values. Our smaller size allows us to adjust services and care levels to meet residents’ changing needs and to avoid having to move them to a higher level of care prematurely.
Hospice Trained Staff
If you ask a resident or a loved one’s family what makes Decatur House different from other assisted living communities, inevitably, the answer is the personal care. We take tremendous pride in our staffing ratio (3 caregivers to 8 residents). We also provide additional training and continuing education opportunities for all our staff.
The vast majority of residents that move into Decatur House remain here without having to later move to a skilled nursing facility. Our hospice trained staff will work closely with the resident, their family, and a local hospice agency to provide the best possible care. For our residents, Decatur House is and remains their home. This is the place they know and are most comfortable. Residents have developed close friendships with other residents and with staff.
Comforts of Home
Decatur House has beautiful and inviting common areas, just like home including several interior sunrooms and two exterior porches with comfortable seating. In our living room, we have a large, high-definition flat-screen television for those with visual impairments. A spacious living room with gas log fireplace and library. Four-season, glass-walled garden room for dining and activities. Furnishings like home.
In addition to these amenities, Decatur House is surrounded by beautifully tended gardens, filled with an abundance of perennials such as foxglove, lupine, hosta, daisies, and several day varieties of lilies. Dexter rhododendrons, hydrangeas and azaleas are abound on the grounds. Blooming gardens are visible from every room at Decatur House from April through October. In the winter, evergreens such as umbrella pine, blue spruce plus American and English hollies touched by snow create a lovely, outdoor New England scene.
Locally Owned and Operated
Decatur House is locally owned and intimately operated by Sandwich residents Steve and Linda Austin. This is a significant differentiator. Decisions about the livelihood of our residents are made here, at Decatur House, and not in offsite corporate offices where red tape can slow down the process on issues that matter most to you.
PRICING: Our pricing is simplified and easy to understand and comes with no surprises. In fact, residents save significantly at Decatur House and the services we provide are uniquely individualized.
ENVIRONMENT: Often referred to as a “high end bed & breakfast”, we are a true residential setting and not a large facility. Each resident enjoys their own private apartment with kitchenette and private bathroom with views of our well-appointed grounds and neighborhood.
WELLNESS: Our activities and social programming schedule is built around residents’ spiritual, cultural, educational and wellness interests. It is a holistic program that we feel is meaningful in their lives.
Most importantly, a beautiful blend of a residential setting and old-fashioned family values is what Decatur House is all about.
