What is May, but a breeze between spring and summer? This month has blown by with all the activities and celebrations. Connie’s friends stopped by with flower arrangements for every resident! (See photo above middle).
Derby Day was celebrated with a special tea at the Dunbar Inn Tearoom (see photo above left). We wore handcrafted fascinators. Ours were not the only fascinators we noticed, but we had the largest group and our ladies reveled in the attention. They were fun to make and along with the horseracing game, fun to display. We also enjoyed another fun outing to Fisherman’s View.
There were several meaningful movies on the calendar this month, including one intended to spark conversation: the animated movie-“Coco.” Delicious margaritas were enjoyed, and everyone agreed that the movie was “interesting and unexpected.”
We celebrated Mother’s Day by honoring Mothers with a Ladies’ Tea hosted by Chef Cynthia. Cynthia’s tea always exceeds expectations and according to one attendee, “the offerings rival any in the state.” As a special treat, Decatur House ladies were pampered with facials, manicures, and a foot soak.
May was also a month full of birthdays. We celebrated Mary Clare D., Joan W., Maureen S., Maggie B. and staff member, Alex S. With an average monthly age of 80, “Don’t ask. Don’t tell.” has morphed into a youthful, “tell us how you do it!”
Local artists Leonie Little-Lex and Mary Shea returned to teach art classes. Donna Klucevsek again, kept authentic Tai Chi accessible and Susan Nolan, Reiki practitioner, helped residents recharge their energy (see photo of Susan with Ralph above right).
Mike Hale, devout layperson, provided for our resident’s spiritual interest and Julie Charland brought the magic that only music creates. Attending the Memorial Day Parade in our own front yard and participating in a poetry reading allowed us to pause and consider weightier aspects of our lives, together, with respect and an affirming perspective.
May was great. On the Cape, our “true summer” has begun and with all the activities and celebrations planned for June, summer is looking to be amazing too.
