It wasn’t so long ago we were all longing for warm weather and now a cool breeze was just as welcome as the hot sunshine. Cape Cod turned up the heat just in time for our annual Family Barbeque. Hamburgers, hotdogs, a multitude of delicious homemade salads and ice cream sandwiches-simple and delicious summertime fare that keep the focus where it should be. Residents enjoyed time outdoors with family, friends and especially the grandchildren.
There was so much to enjoy this month: “Hip Hop Chair Dancing” with Rondae Drafts (everyone had a great time!). Residents enjoyed musical performances by guitarist Chris Carter and “Honky Tonk “ pianist Gary Landgren. Bona fide and would-be artists alike enjoyed painting classes with local artists Leonie Little-Lex and Mary Shea. See the beautiful painting by Chuck above!
Residents that enjoy baking, had the opportunity to create peanut butter kiss cookies. Much to their delight, the people that enjoyed eating cookies had their opportunity as well! At Decatur House, we are always trying something new like seated soccer-Fun! However, the Axe Throwing Game was met with caution and curiosity, then finally enthusiasm as word got around about the “Axes.” And of course, the ladies always love their card games.
Our outings included a train ride on the Cape Cod Central Railroad – see photo of Ben and Betty above – and lunch out at Mama Mia’s, which everyone agreed was fantastic. Also this month, the men were pampered with nailcare and hand massages during a “Healthy Hands” activity, and with the help of our wonderful kitchen staff residents made fruit kabobs, which were a big hit on a sweltering day! See photo of Maggie above.
One of our most well attended activities was a Taste Test featuring homemade energy drink and corn cake by Maria Martinez a longtime, hardworking housekeeper at Decatur House.
New resident, Ben, said that he has noticed that staff doesn’t just work from their own department here. That’s a good thing, because like every resident, each staff member has their own unique contributions. That is what makes Decatur House a special place to live.
