November brought a chance to celebrate and thank our Decatur House veterans. In their honor, we had a live concert over Zoom right in our own living room, as a Boston-area pianist played a repertoire of patriotic music. Several veterans shared photos of themselves from “back
in the day” for our display table. Creating watercolor poppies was both a fun and a meaningful art project. We’re grateful to the Ferreira family of Forestdale for writing thank you cards to each of our veterans this year, and we look forward to the day when they can all meet in person!
November also brought the first of our quarterly Family Meet-Ups. Again using Zoom technology, we brought two Decatur House families together with management staff to talk about holidays at the house, share ideas for keeping family communication going over the miles, and answer any questions. The next Family Meet-Up will be in February, so please watch for the Zoom invite. In the meantime, we’ll send out a link to the recording of the first one, so you can see what it’s all about. We invite your input as to how that time can best be spent.
Planned December activities include watching lots of Christmas movies and enjoying “Winter Lights Rides” in the house vehicles. Sandwich is famous for its “Giants,” large metal sculptures that are covered in lights and installed along Route 6A. It will be fun to see if we can find them all and learn their stories. A little bit of caroling just may break out along the way. And WE will be the lucky recipients of caroling when Sandwich High School’s famous “Sandwich Soul” singing group stops by to sing outside through slightly-opened windows at mid-month. Even in the strange times we’re living through, there will of course be a Christmas party here at the house; we’re all looking forward to that.
With sincere best wishes for a wonderful holiday season, from all of us here at Decatur House,
Cathy Ode
