Christmas decorations are tucked away, and the whirlwind of parties, travel, and shopping has passed. January should be a time to relax, recharge, and catch up on whatever December pushed aside. But this January brought phrases like “monster snowstorm,” “bombogenesis,” and “record-breaking, subzero temperatures!” January’s cold kept everyone busy. Systems were checked, supplies stocked, and snow cleared with tireless dedication. Thank you to the facilities staff of Decatur House and to the Town of Sandwich for keeping us safe.
Still, the month was far from one long snow day. We rang in the new year with hats and poppers and whisper sang Happy Birthday to Betty M. during a lunch outing at the Sagamore Inn so as not to embarrass her. The food was delicious, and the company was even better. Several New Year intentions took shape in January, including volunteering to serve homemade soup at First Church and crafting bird treats together with the students at Sandwich Montessori School (see photo of Mary Clare above). Many of our resident volunteers are parents and former teachers who find joy in making a meaningful and practical impact on the next generation.
Those focused on health goals, hit the ground walking at the Center for Active Living track (see photo of Joe above). Fitness sessions with Kristin, Tai Chi with Donna, and Reiki with Susan helped keep our residents active and healthy. Our artist residents bravely picked up brushes in acrylic classes with L’eonie Little Lex and watercolor classes with Mary Shea (see photo of Marilyn, Nancy and Mary above). Finished works were proudly displayed in the activity room. Marilyn, an artist and former teacher, shared, “It’s fun to challenge yourself and see the growth in your technique.”
And yes, there was time to relax. Favorite films like Little Women and The Quiet Man were requested, while Two Mules for Sister Sara, Sleepless in Seattle, and Season 2 of Man on the Inside sparked lively conversation during social hour. Brain games such as Wordle, Word in a Word, Wheel of Fortune, and word puzzles offered a more cerebral kind of fun. Manicures, crafting, and daily social hours created space to strengthen friendships, a New Year intention high on everyone’s list. At Decatur House, our intention for the year ahead is simple: to help you make it a great one!
