Decatur House had such a great time with the “Sandwich Arts Alliance Adirondack Chair Trail” last year, that we decided to get more involved as participants this year!
The way the event works is, a local business sponsors an artist who creates a theme and paints a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind Adirondack chair that is displayed throughout the summer season at a business in town. Then, families and/or individuals receive a map to go on a scavenger hunt to find all 23 of the unique chairs.
Last year, Decatur House attended the silent auction event held at the end of the summer and purchased a beautiful chair entitled, “Garden Delight” created by artist, Elizabeth A. Murphy, which was sponsored by Diesel & Lulu’s. Now, it sits on our front porch for the enjoyment of all of our visitors!
According to Decatur House Executive Director, Sarah Tribuzio “So many of Decatur House’s residents are talented artists. We felt that they would enjoy being involved with creating a chair for the auction this year. Supporting their interests, while at the same time supporting the Sandwich Arts Alliance is rewarding.”
Each week during the month of April, artist Sandra Taylor-Vose has been working with a committee of Decatur House residents including: Lourana Thomas, Joe Foote, Nancy Clark, Maureen Silva and Pat Casavant to come up with a theme, prime the chair and begin creating the masterpiece. See photo of Nancy, Lourana and Sandy above!
The residents aren’t ready to tell you much about their chair yet! They want you to come see it for yourself at Decatur House this summer!
There will be a sneak peek event May 12 at the Sandwich Arts Alliance Center before all of the chairs go to their summer homes.
Then Memorial Day through Labor Day, the chairs will be on display throughout the town at local businesses and at family events.
Finally, the Chair Auction will take place in mid-September at the Sagamore Inn. We’ll keep you posted as we get closer!
